At Q Healing Farm, located on the land of the Simpcw First Nation, the past months have been filled with meaningful work and deep connection. Our community has come together to nurture the land, share knowledge, and strengthen family bonds. This farm is more than just a place to grow food—it is a space where healing, culture, and sustainability come alive through hands-on experience and ceremony.

Building Foundations for Growth
One of the first major projects was constructing five raised garden beds, each measuring 4 by 8 feet. These beds provide a controlled environment for growing organic vegetables and herbs, which supports food sovereignty for our community. Building the beds was a family effort, involving over 100 hours of collective work. This hands-on activity not only prepared the soil but also created a shared sense of accomplishment.
The beds were carefully planted with a variety of crops suited to the local climate and soil conditions. Choosing native and resilient plants helps reduce the need for chemical inputs and supports biodiversity. This approach reflects our commitment to land stewardship and sustainable farming practices.
Learning Through Ceremony and Language
Our work at the farm is deeply connected to cultural teachings. We held pipe ceremony teachings that reminded us of the spiritual relationship we have with the land. These ceremonies create space for reflection, gratitude, and healing. They also strengthen the bonds between community members as we come together in respect and shared purpose.
Language is another vital part of our connection to the land. Secwepemcstin language teachings were integrated into our gatherings, helping to preserve and revitalize the language of the Simpcw people. Language carries knowledge about the environment, traditional practices, and community values. Learning and using Secwepemcstin at the farm enriches our experience and honors our ancestors.
Sweat Lodge Construction and Healing
Building a sweat lodge was a significant milestone for Q Healing Farm. The sweat lodge serves as a place for purification, healing, and community gathering. Constructing it required teamwork, patience, and respect for traditional methods. Once completed, the lodge became a sacred space where families and community members can come together to sweat, pray, and heal.
The sweat lodge ceremonies have brought laughter, tears, and shared stories. These moments deepen our understanding of healing as a collective process that involves mind, body, and spirit. The sweat lodge is a reminder that healing is ongoing and rooted in connection—to each other and to the land.
Sharing Knowledge Through Workshops
To spread the benefits of organic gardening, we hosted a workshop led by Uncle Freddy, a respected elder and gardener. The workshop covered practical skills such as soil preparation, seed selection, pest management, and harvesting techniques. Participants gained hands-on experience and learned how to grow food in harmony with nature.
Workshops like this empower community members to take control of their food sources and promote healthy eating habits. They also create opportunities for intergenerational learning, where elders share wisdom and younger generations bring fresh energy and ideas.
Cultivating Beauty and Biodiversity
In addition to food crops, we planted a flower bed to attract pollinators and add beauty to the farm. Flowers play a crucial role in supporting bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects that help maintain a healthy ecosystem. This small but important step contributes to the overall resilience of our farm.
The flower bed also serves as a place of inspiration and relaxation. It reminds us that farming is not only about production but also about creating spaces that nurture the soul.
The Power of Family Time
Throughout all these activities, the most valuable outcome has been the time spent together as a family. Logging over 100 hours of shared work, ceremony, and laughter has strengthened relationships and built a foundation of trust and support. This time together reflects what family means in our community: working side by side, learning from one another, and healing together.
The farm is a living example of how community, healing, land stewardship, and food sovereignty intersect. It shows that sustainable farming is not just about growing food but about growing connections and resilience.
Moving Forward with Purpose
Q Healing Farm continues to be a place where culture, community, and sustainability thrive. The work done so far lays the groundwork for future projects, including expanding the garden beds, hosting more workshops, and deepening cultural teachings.
For anyone interested in sustainable farming or community healing, this farm offers a powerful example of what is possible when people come together with respect for the land and each other. The lessons learned here can inspire similar efforts in other communities seeking to reclaim their food systems and cultural heritage.
